If a vehicle in Cerritos is no longer worth repairing, cannot be driven, or has become difficult to keep, you can request an as-is offer instead of putting more money into it. Family Car Buyers buys junk cars in a range of conditions, including non-running vehicles, cars with major mechanical problems, collision damage, and vehicles with salvage or total-loss history.

The online quote form asks for make, model, year, ZIP code, and contact information. Use the message field to add the car’s condition, approximate mileage if known, title status, and whether it starts or rolls. Request a free quote or call (888) 761-5964.

When a Junk Car Becomes a Storage Problem in Cerritos

A car that no longer runs can become difficult to keep at home or on the street. The City of Cerritos Code Enforcement guidance lists inoperable vehicles stored in public view among residential property-maintenance violations and advises keeping them in a garage, backyard, or screened side yard.

Cerritos also generally requires a parking permit for vehicles left on City streets between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. These rules do not require you to sell a vehicle, but they can make indefinite street or driveway storage less practical.

If the car cannot be moved easily, mention flat tires, missing keys, locked steering, garage clearance, or blocked access when discussing pickup.

What Information Should You Provide?

A useful quote starts with an accurate description of the vehicle as it sits now. You do not need to diagnose every problem yourself.

Include, when available:

  • year, make, model, and approximate mileage;
  • whether the engine starts and the car rolls or steers;
  • major mechanical, collision, or body damage;
  • title status and any recorded lien;
  • exact pickup location and access restrictions.

If a repair shop diagnosed a failed engine, transmission problem, structural damage, or another major issue, include that information. Otherwise, describe the symptoms instead of guessing.

What Kinds of Junk Cars Can Be Submitted?

A junk car does not have to fit one exact condition. Some vehicles are no longer economical to repair. Others have been wrecked, have serious mechanical failures, have been sitting unused, or cannot be driven safely.

A car with a blown engine, major suspension problem, frame damage, or extensive collision damage may be worth comparing as-is against the cost and uncertainty of repairs.

“Junk car” is a practical selling description, not a California DMV title category. The vehicle’s legal status still depends on its actual ownership and title records.

California Title and Ownership Issues

The California DMV title guidance explains that the Certificate of Title is the state’s ownership document used in a vehicle transfer. If a California title is lost, stolen, or damaged, DMV provides REG 227, the Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title.

If a lien is still recorded, the lienholder’s interest generally must be released as part of the transfer. Out-of-state titles and other ownership complications can require additional documentation, so disclose them before pickup is arranged.

After a sale or transfer, California requires the seller to submit a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability within five calendar days. The NRL informs DMV that the vehicle changed hands; it does not itself complete the ownership transfer.

Junk Car, Salvage, and Nonrepairable Are Different Terms

California uses specific legal categories for severely damaged vehicles. A vehicle declared a total loss may receive a Salvage Certificate. A Nonrepairable Vehicle Certificate is a different status, and a vehicle issued that certificate cannot later be titled or re-registered for road use.

That distinction matters because “junk car” is common selling language, while salvage and nonrepairable are official DMV classifications. The California DMV guidance for salvage and nonrepairable vehicles explains the difference. Describe the document you actually have when requesting an offer.

Repair It or Sell It As-Is?

Before approving a major repair, compare the written repair estimate, a realistic value after repair, and an as-is offer. Also account for the possibility that additional damage may be discovered after the vehicle is disassembled.

Cerritos adds a local consideration. The City’s Code Enforcement guidance lists major auto repairs performed in public view as a property-maintenance violation. That does not prohibit lawful repairs at an appropriate location, but it can make a major driveway repair impractical.

If the repair cost and uncertainty do not justify the likely value afterward, selling the car as-is may be the more practical choice.

If the Junk Car Is at a Repair Shop or Tow Yard

Before arranging pickup from third-party property, confirm that the shop or yard will release the vehicle. Ask whether unpaid repair, towing, or storage charges remain and whether authorization is required.

California allows certain repair, towing, and storage providers to have liens for unpaid services. A vehicle being held under a lien may need that issue resolved before it can be released. The California DMV lien-sale guidance explains how these situations can affect a vehicle being held for unpaid services.

Provide the facility name, address, access information, and any known charges when discussing pickup.

How the Selling Process Works

Start with the request-a-quote form or call (888) 761-5964. Give enough information to explain the vehicle’s condition and any title, lien, storage, or mobility issue.

If an offer is made, review the amount and confirm the required documents, payment method, and pickup details before accepting. If you accept, the current Family Car Buyers process states that free pickup is coordinated afterward.

Before releasing the vehicle, make sure the agreed amount, documents, payment method, and pickup arrangements are clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell a junk car that still runs?

Yes. A vehicle can still run but have damage or repair needs that make an as-is sale worth considering.

What if the junk car has no key?

Mention the missing key when requesting an offer because it can affect access and loading.

Can I request an offer without an exact mechanical diagnosis?

Yes. Describe the symptoms and any confirmed findings from a repair shop rather than guessing at the cause.

What if the title is missing?

California DMV provides REG 227 for certain replacement-title and transfer situations. Lien or out-of-state title situations can require different documentation.

What if the car was declared a total loss?

State what title, Salvage Certificate, or other paperwork you have. California treats salvage and nonrepairable vehicles differently.

Can a junk car be picked up from a shop or tow yard?

Potentially, but the facility must be willing to release it. Confirm access, authorization requirements, and unpaid charges first.

Do I have to accept the offer?

No. You can compare the offer with repair, storage, insurance, or other selling options before deciding.
