REPLACEMENT TITLE – MICHIGAN
You cannot transfer ownership of your vehicle if you do not possess the Title Certificate. In Michigan the registered owner of the vehicle is the one who maintains possession of the paper title.
REPLACEMENT. The title must be “replaced” if the original has been lost, damaged (rips, coffee stains, water damage), has cross outs or white outs, or has incorrect entries (such as seller’s printed name and signature not matching the official names on the front of the title) or signatures in the wrong place.
You can order a replacement (duplicate) title online. You will need the last four digits of your SS number, driver’s license or state ID. Go to the link
https://onlineservices.michigan.gov/ExpressSOS/DuplicateTitleRegistration/EligibilityRequirements. Just click Duplicate Title in the middle block.
You have the option of visiting a Secretary of State (SOS) office. Locations can be found at http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,1607,7-127-1640_14837-34560–,00.html
