New Hampshire Car Title Transfer Information

In order to properly complete a New Hampshire title upon sale, follow these instructions:

Seller / Registered Owner Title Transfer

  • If there are any liens shown on the front of the title that are not released, you will need to have it signed off by the lienholder, or obtain an original release document from the lienholder. See form RELEASE OF LIEN OR OTHER ENCUMBRANCES at the link https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/forms/documents/tdmv20.pdf
  • Note: Vehicles from years 1999 and earlier are not required to have titles. However, you can still use the old title to transfer ownership, if you have it. Otherwise, see step 8 below.
  • Title Transfer. On the back of the title you will fill out completely the upper block of information that says ASSIGNMENT OF TITLE.
  • Print the buyer(s) name and address on the lines provided. Enter Date of Sale.
  • Under ODOMETER DISCLOSURE STATEMENT fill in the odometer reading in the space provided. Enter your mileage EXACTLY AS IT APPEARS ON YOUR ODOMETER. DO NOT INCLUDE “TENTHS”. If the odometer reflects the actual mileage, check the box (if any) that says “actual mileage”. If the odometer does not reflect the actual miles on the car, check the box that says “I certify to the best of my knowledge this odometer reading is NOT THE ACTUAL MILEAGE. WARNING – ODOMETER DISCREPANCY”.
  • Below the odometer section the seller(s) signs name(s) on the lines provided at the left. Print names on the lines to the right. MAKE SURE TO PRINT YOUR NAME (OR NAMES) EXACTLY as appears on the front of the title below “OWNER(S) NAME AND ADDRESS”. (DON’T USE SHORT NAMES OR NICKNAMES!). Where there are TWO registered owners listed on the title, you must check to see if there is an“OR” or nothing listed between the registered owners’ names. If there is an “OR”, EITHER registered owner can sign and print their name using the instructions above. Otherwise, the signatures and printed names of BOTH registered owners are required.
  • Finally, the buyer(s) signs and prints on the last line.
  • Bill of Sale Transfer (for vehicles 1999 and older). Provide a Bill of Sale and a copy of the previous registration. Bill of Sale (Report of Sale…) form is at https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/forms/documents/tdmv22a.pdf … OR …Provide Bill of Sale and a properly filled out Verification of Vehicle Identification form https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/forms/documents/tdmv19a.pdf .
  • Keep your license plates (If you want to transfer plates to the sold vehicle, contact DMV for guidance).
  • For assistance New Hampshire DMV office locations can be found at https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/locations/index.htm .

This was our first time selling a used car on any platform. Using Family Car Buyers was a fantastic experience. Professional and efficient from the beginning to the end of the process. They paid top dollar, they organized towing, and I got paid in full immediately. I will definitely sell any other used/junk car to Family Car Buyers in the future.

Our old car had a couple of problems we didn’t want to bother with fixing, but it was challenging to find the right buyer for a fixer upper. Family Car Buyers was great! Super easy to work with and they were quick to respond. I would definitely work with them again.
