Kansas Car Title Transfer Information

In order to properly complete a Kansas title upon sale, follow these instructions:

Seller / Registered Owner  –  Kansas Title Transfer

  • After January 1, 2003 there are no paper titles issued if there is a lien on the vehicle. Kansas maintains these files electronically. Lien holder information is shown on the current registration receipt for the vehicle (If you have no paperwork you can get help at a County Treasurer’s motor vehicle office https://www.kansastreasurers.org/vehicle/vehicle.htm ). If there is a lien, and you want to sell to an individual, it can be done, but you will need help. Contact your lien holder and/or County Treasurer’s office for guidance.
  • To transfer a paper title issued before Jan 1, 2003 fill in the ASSIGNMENT OF TITLE section at the top on the back of the title. You and the buyer must print and sign following the guidelines discussed in step 6 below. Odometer info is not required, as vehicle is over ten years old. Check current vehicle registration to make sure no liens exist against this vehicle, as the paper copy may have never been updated. The signatures do not have to be notarized. You will need a Bill of Sale. Form is at https://www.ksrevenue.gov/pdf/tr12.pdf .
  • To transfer a paper title issued after Jan 1, 2003, you will fill in the ASSIGNMENT OF TITLE section at the top on the back of the title. Beginning at the the top section, print the name and address of the buyer(s) in the spaces provided.
  • Fill in the odometer reading on the line provided EXACTLY AS IT APPEARS ON YOUR ODOMETER. DO NOT INCLUDE “TENTHS”. If the odometer does not reflect the actual miles on the car, check the box that says “the odometer reading is not the actual mileage. WARNING-ODOMETER DISCREPANCY” (Odometer info not required if vehicle is over ten years old).
  • Fill in the Purchase price and date in the spaces provided..
  • Print and sign your name(s) on the lines as provided. MAKE SURE TO PRINT YOUR NAME (OR NAMES) EXACTLY as appears on the front of the title below “NAME(S) AND ADDRESS OF OWNER(S)”. (DON’T USE SHORT NAMES OR NICKNAMES!). Where there are TWO registered owners listed on the title, you must check to see if there is an “OR” or nothing listed between the registered owners’ names. If there is an “OR”, EITHER registered owner can sign and print their name using the instructions above. If there is “&/or” or “and/or”, EITHER registered owner can sign. Otherwise, the signatures and printed names of of BOTH registered owners are required.
  • Check current vehicle registration to make sure no liens exist against this vehicle, as the paper copy may not be updated.
  • Buyer must print and sign name(s) in spaces provided.
  • You must complete and mail SELLER’S NOTIFICATION OF SALE. Form is at https://pay.payitgov.com/ikan-vehicles-notice-of-sale
  • Keep your license plates.

This was our first time selling a used car on any platform. Using Family Car Buyers was a fantastic experience. Professional and efficient from the beginning to the end of the process. They paid top dollar, they organized towing, and I got paid in full immediately. I will definitely sell any other used/junk car to Family Car Buyers in the future.

Our old car had a couple of problems we didn’t want to bother with fixing, but it was challenging to find the right buyer for a fixer upper. Family Car Buyers was great! Super easy to work with and they were quick to respond. I would definitely work with them again.
