In order to properly complete a Kansas title upon sale, follow these instructions:
Seller / Registered Owner – Kansas Title Transfer
- After January 1, 2003 there are no paper titles issued if there is a lien on the vehicle. Kansas maintains these files electronically. Lien holder information is shown on the current registration receipt for the vehicle (If you have no paperwork you can get help at a County Treasurer’s motor vehicle office https://www.kansastreasurers.org/vehicle/vehicle.htm ). If there is a lien, and you want to sell to an individual, it can be done, but you will need help. Contact your lien holder and/or County Treasurer’s office for guidance.
- To transfer a paper title issued before Jan 1, 2003 fill in the ASSIGNMENT OF TITLE section at the top on the back of the title. You and the buyer must print and sign following the guidelines discussed in step 6 below. Odometer info is not required, as vehicle is over ten years old. Check current vehicle registration to make sure no liens exist against this vehicle, as the paper copy may have never been updated. The signatures do not have to be notarized. You will need a Bill of Sale. Form is at https://www.ksrevenue.gov/pdf/tr12.pdf .
