In order to properly complete a Minnesota title upon sale, follow this resource guide.
Seller / Registered Owner Title Transfer Instructions
As the seller, you will make entries on the middle portion on the front of the title, and one entry on the back’ On the front all of your entries will be below the bold line marked “ASSIGNMENT BY SELLER” and above the section marked “APPLICATION FOR TITLE BY BUYER” :
On the front, the first item is the “ODOMETER DISCLOSURE STATEMENT”. On the line that says “NOW READS” enter your mileage EXACTLY AS IT APPEARS ON YOUR ODOMETER. DO NOT INCLUDE “TENTHS”. If the odometer reflects the actual mileage, check the box to the right that says “IS ACTUAL MILEAGE”. If the odometer does not reflect the actual miles on the car, check the box below that says “IS NOT ACTUAL MILEAGE – WARNING-ODOMETER DISCREPANCY”.
Next is the “DAMAGE DISCLOSURE STATEMENT” check one of the blocks (“HAS or HAS NOT”) showing if the vehicle has had damage of more than 70 per cent of its cash value (Any costs for air bag work are not included).
In the next section on the left side of the title PRINT the seller’s name on the line shown. MAKE SURE TO PRINT YOUR NAME (OR NAMES) EXACTLY as appears on the top part of the title below “OWNER”. (DON’T USE SHORT NAMES OR NICKNAMES!). Where there are TWO registered owners listed on the title, you must check to see if there is an an “OR” or nothing listed between the registered owners’ names. If there is an “OR”, EITHER registered owner can sign and print their name using the instructions above. Otherwise, the signatures and printed names of of BOTH registered owners are required.
PRINT the seller’s address on the next line.
Seller then signs on the next line, just as printed.
Enter the date of sale on the line shown in the middle of the title: month/day/year.
On the right side of the title PRINT the Buyer’s name and address on the lines shown, and then the Buyer signs on the third line.
On the back of the Title in the upper left corner enter the “FULL PURCHASE PRICE” on the line shown.
You must make a “Report of Sale” if your car was sold to an individual, if it was donated, junked or totaled. This is not required if you sold to a Dealer. Use this link to make an online report: https://mndriveinfo.org/
Get a Bill of Sale / Receipt for yourself.
Other helpful info
- Do not erase anything or use “white-out”
- Do not cross out or scratch anything out
- Write nearly with good handwriting
- Only use BLACK or BLUE ink
- Use actual names…no nicknames!
- Don’t Make Mistakes!
- Any errors can void the document!
Duplicate Title in Minnesota
